Post #4 – How to Balance Your Mizāj (Temperament) Naturally with Food & Lifestyle

Assalamu Alaikum again, dear readers!
Now that you’ve discovered your Mizāj (temperament) in our last post, let’s talk about the most important step:

How to balance your temperament using food, habits, and Unani lifestyle guidance.

When your Mizāj is balanced, you feel energetic, clear-minded, emotionally stable, and less prone to disease. But when it’s disturbed, illness begins.

🌿 The Unani Philosophy of Balance

In Unani medicine, health is defined as the natural balance of four qualities:

  • Hot / Cold

  • Moist / Dry

Each person’s Mizāj has a dominant combination of these. So, the treatment or diet must work against the excess to restore equilibrium.

For example:
If your temperament is Hot & Dry (Safravi), you need cooling and moistening things to balance it.

🍎 Diet & Lifestyle Tips for Each Mizāj

🔴 1. Damwi (Hot & Moist)

Goal: Reduce heat and moisture

  • 🥗 Eat: Cooling foods like cucumbers, melons, mint, pomegranate, barley water

  • ❌ Avoid: Fried food, red meat, spicy dishes

  • 💡 Lifestyle: Avoid overexertion, take rest breaks, stay hydrated

🟠 2. Safravi (Hot & Dry)

Goal: Reduce dryness and heat

  • 🥗 Eat: Soothing, moist foods like milk, ghee, bananas, figs, rose water

  • ❌ Avoid: Coffee, chili, vinegar, fried or salty food

  • 💡 Lifestyle: Wake early, avoid anger and stress, take midday naps

🔵 3. Balghami (Cold & Moist)

Goal: Increase warmth and reduce moisture

  • 🥗 Eat: Warm, light foods like ginger tea, black pepper, soups, dates

  • ❌ Avoid: Cold dairy, rice at night, excessive sleep

  • 💡 Lifestyle: Stay active, do regular walking or massage, avoid daytime naps

⚫ 4. Saudawi (Cold & Dry)

Goal: Increase warmth and moisture

  • 🥗 Eat: Warm and oily foods like olive oil, nuts, honey, chicken soup

  • ❌ Avoid: Dry or stale food, cold water, fasting for long hours

  • 💡 Lifestyle: Stay socially active, keep warm, engage in creative hobbies

📿 Bonus: Regimenal Therapies (Ilāj bi’l Tadbīr)

You can also try traditional Unani therapies under expert guidance:

  • Hijama (cupping) for blood purification

  • Dalk (massage) for dryness or stiffness

  • Hammam (steam bath) for cold or moist imbalances

  • Nutool (pouring therapy) for headaches and stress relief

🧠 Final Tip: Listen to Your Body

Unani medicine teaches us to observe signs—your skin, mood, appetite, sleep, and even stool tell you if your Mizāj is in balance.
