Post #6 – Hijāmah (Cupping Therapy) in Unani Medicine: Benefits, Methods & Modern View

Assalamu Alaikum dear readers,
Welcome back to Tibbology Times, your guide to holistic healing through the blend of Unani tradition and modern medicine.

Today, we’re discussing one of the most well-known regimenal therapies in Unani medicine — Hijāmah, also known as cupping therapy.

Used for centuries across cultures, Hijāmah is now gaining recognition in modern health circles for its detoxifying, pain-relieving, and energizing effects.

🩸 What is Hijāmah?

Hijāmah means “sucking” or “drawing out” in Arabic.
It’s a technique where small cups are placed on the skin to draw out impure or stagnant blood from specific points on the body.

In Unani medicine, it is used to:

  • Remove waste products from the blood

  • Balance the humors (Akhlaṭ)

  • Relieve pain, inflammation, and chronic fatigue

There are two main types:

  1. Dry Cupping (Hijāmah Bila Shart) – No cutting, only suction

  2. Wet Cupping (Hijāmah Bil Shart) – Small incisions are made to draw out blood

🌿 Benefits of Hijāmah Therapy

✅ Detoxifies blood and tissues
✅ Improves blood circulation
✅ Reduces chronic pain (joint, back, neck)
✅ Boosts immunity
✅ Calms the nervous system and relieves stress
✅ Helps in migraines, sciatica, hypertension, and skin diseases

Modern studies suggest cupping stimulates:

  • Microcirculation

  • Anti-inflammatory response

  • Endorphin release

📍 Common Points for Hijāmah

  • Back of the neck

  • Shoulders

  • Lower back

  • Between the shoulder blades

  • Knees, thighs (for joint pain)

A Hakim or trained therapist chooses points based on your Mizāj and illness.

⚠️ Safety & Guidelines

🔸 Always get cupping done by a qualified and trained practitioner
🔸 Ensure use of sterile, single-use cups and blades
🔸 Avoid it during pregnancy, anemia, or if you’re on blood thinners
🔸 The best time: 17th, 19th, or 21st day of the lunar month (as per Sunnah)

🧠 Hijāmah in Modern View

Modern researchers are now exploring Hijāmah for:

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Sports recovery

Even top athletes use cupping for faster recovery!
