Healing with Nature: ʿIlāj bi’l-Dawā’ (Drug Therapy in Unani Medicine)

🌿 Post #10: ʿIlāj bi’l-Dawā’ (Drug Therapy in Unani Medicine)

Assalāmu ʿAlaikum dear readers,
Welcome back to Tibbology Times! 🌿 In our journey through the healing wisdom of Unani medicine, today we explore one of its most essential pillars — ʿIlāj bi’l-Dawā’ (Drug Therapy). This classical approach emphasizes the use of natural medicines—from herbs, minerals, and animal sources—to correct derangements in the Akhlāṭ (humors) and restore Iʿtidāl (equilibrium of Mizāj).

🔹 Principles of ʿIlāj bi’l-Dawā’

  • Muwāfaqat al-Mizāj (Temperamental Suitability):
Drugs are chosen according to the patient’s altered Mizāj, so their qualities (hot, cold, dry, moist) help re-establish balance.

  • Quwwat al-Dawā’ (Potency) & Miqdār al-Daws (Dose):
The strength and dosage of the drug must be carefully regulated to achieve benefit without harm.

  • Aqrabādhīn (Pharmacopoeia & Dosage Forms):
Unani drugs are administered in various classical forms, including:
    Sufūf (powders)
    Joshānda (decoctions)
    Sharbat (syrups)
    Roghan (medicated oils)
    Marham (ointments)
    Majūn, Jawāriš, Lauq (compound preparations)

  • Tadbīr al-Adwiyah (Processing of Drugs):
Techniques such as purification, soaking, roasting, distillation, and trituration are applied to enhance efficacy and reduce potential side effects.

🔹 Classification of Drugs

  1. Mufradāt (Single Drugs): Simple natural substances used alone.

  2. Murakkabāt (Compound Drugs): Formulations combining multiple substances for synergistic effect.

  3. Adwiyah Mufarriḥa (Tonics): Strengthening agents that refresh and support organs such as the heart and brain.

🌱 Examples of Commonly Used Drugs

  • Ispaghūl (Plantago ovata): Gentle laxative, regulates bowel movements.

  • Asl al-Sūs (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Effective in sore throat, gastritis, and lung ailments.

  • Zanjabīl (Zingiber officinale): Aids digestion, relieves nausea, warms the stomach.

  • Sanā Makki (Senna alexandrina): Used for cleansing and treating constipation.

🔹 Unani vs Modern Drug Therapy

Aspect Unani (ʿIlāj bi’l-Dawā’) Modern Pharmacotherapy
Source Natural: herbal, mineral, animal Mostly synthetic/semi-synthetic
Selection Based on Mizāj & humoral imbalance Based on biochemical/clinical pathology
Processing Tadbīr al-Adwiyah (purification & modification) Industrial chemical synthesis
Approach Holistic, individualized Target-specific, standardized

✨ Summary

ʿIlāj bi’l-Dawā’ remains a cornerstone of Unani healing. Through carefully selected natural medicines, adjusted for Mizāj and Akhlāṭ, it provides safe, effective, and holistic care. By integrating classical wisdom with modern insights, it continues to contribute to human health and wellness.
