Age-Wise & Constitution-Wise Care: Tadābīr in Unani Medicine

👶👩‍🦳 Post #15: Tadābīr for Different Ages and Constitutions in Unani Medicine

Assalāmu ʿAlaikum dear readers,
Welcome back to Tibbology Times! After learning how to adjust our lifestyle with the seasons, today we’ll see how Unani physicians tailored their guidance for various age groups and individual constitutions (Mizāj).
This personalisation makes Unani medicine a truly patient-centred and preventive system.

🔹 Historical Perspective

  • Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), Rāzī (Rhazes), and other masters noted that a person’s needs change with age and body temperament.

  • They developed Tadābīr (regimens) to suit infants, youth, adults, and elders — as well as people of hot, cold, moist, or dry temperaments.

🔹 General Guidelines by Age

Age Group Key Focus Diet & Lifestyle
Infants & Children Gentle care, support growth Light, easily digestible food (mother’s milk → soft solids); proper sleep; avoid excess heat/cold
Adolescents Support rapid growth & energy Balanced diet, moderate exercise, moral & mental guidance
Adults Maintain strength & balance Seasonal diet, daily exercise, adequate rest
Elderly Preserve vitality, ease digestion Warm, moist foods; mild activity; plenty of rest; emotional comfort

🔹 Tadābīr According to Constitution (Mizāj)

Temperament Core Advice
Hot Prefer cool foods (cucumber, pomegranate); avoid excess spices; light exercise
Cold Choose warming, nourishing foods (dates, nuts); gentle massage; stay warm
Moist Limit heavy, oily meals; include moderate spices; regular activity
Dry Eat soups, stews, and hydrating fruits; keep skin moisturised; avoid overwork

Note: Unani therapy always considers a person’s mizāj before suggesting diet, exercise, or medication.

🔹 Comparison: Unani vs Modern Life-Stage Care

Aspect Unani Approach Modern Health Guidance
Focus Balance humours & temperament Growth, nutrition, exercise
Diet Customised to age & mizāj Calories, macros, vitamins
Regimens Massage, baths, moral support Fitness, paediatric & geriatric care

✨ Summary

Unani medicine values individuality. By recognising changes in age and constitution, its Tadābīr foster balance, strength, and emotional harmony throughout life.
