Preserving Health the Unani Way: Hifzān-i-Ṣiḥḥat Explained

🌞 Post #13: Hifzān-i-Ṣiḥḥat (Preservation of Health in Unani Medicine)

Assalāmu ʿAlaikum dear readers,
Welcome once again to Tibbology Times! After discussing therapies and strengthening the constitution, it’s time to explore a core principle of Unani medicine — Hifzān-i-Ṣiḥḥat, or the preservation of health. This science focuses on maintaining well-being, preventing disease, and living in harmony with nature.

🔹 Historical Perspective

  • Unani scholars such as Hippocrates, Galen, and Ibn Sīnā all stressed the importance of preventing illness before treating it.

  • They taught that preserving health means maintaining a balanced temperament (Mizāj), strong organs, and a pure environment.

🔹 Six Essential Principles (Asbāb-e-Sittah Ḍarūriyyah)

  1. Air (Hawā’): Fresh, clean air keeps body and mind healthy.

  2. Food & Drink (Makūl wa Mashrūb): Eat wholesome foods suited to your temperament.

  3. Physical Activity & Rest (Ḥarakat wa Sukūn): Balance exercise with adequate rest.

  4. Sleep & Wakefulness (Nawm wa Yaqẓa): Maintain regular, refreshing sleep.

  5. Evacuation & Retention (Istifrāgh wa Iḥtibās): Promote elimination of wastes while preserving essentials.

  6. Mental States (A‘rāḍ-e-Nafsāniyyah): Keep emotions stable — avoid excess anger, grief, or fear.

🔹 Practical Guidelines

  • Spend time in open, well-ventilated spaces.

  • Choose seasonal, moderate foods; avoid overeating.

  • Schedule light exercise, such as walking, after meals.

  • Keep a consistent bedtime and avoid late-night stress.

  • Support the body’s natural detox through proper hydration and balanced elimination.

  • Practice gratitude, patience, and positive thinking.

🔹 Comparison: Unani vs Modern Preventive Health

Aspect Unani – Hifzān-i-Ṣiḥḥat Modern Preventive Health
Focus   Balance of six essentials   Hygiene, vaccination, lifestyle
Scope   Body, mind, environment   Mainly biological
Method   Personalized to Mizāj   General public guidelines
Goal   Maintain harmony, prevent disease   Reduce risk factors

✨ Summary

Hifzān-i-Ṣiḥḥat is the heart of Unani practice: safeguarding wellness through air, food, movement, rest, sleep, excretion, and emotional balance. When these essentials stay in order, illness rarely finds a place.

💡 Stay tuned!
Our next post (#17) will look at Tadābīr for Seasonal Changes — how Unani physicians advised adapting lifestyle with the rhythm of the year.
