Living in Harmony with the Seasons: Unani Tadābīr-i-Mausamīyah

🌦️ Post #25: Tadābīr-i-Mausamīyah (Seasonal Regimens in Unani Medicine)

Assalāmu ʿAlaikum dear readers,
Welcome back to Tibbology Times! After exploring Tadābīr for different stages of life, today we’ll learn how Unani medicine guides us to live in harmony with the changing seasons — a vital part of Hifzān-i-Sehat (preservation of health).

Unani physicians recognized that climate and seasonal variations directly affect the Mizāj (temperament) of the body. By adjusting our daily habits according to these changes, we can prevent disease and maintain balance.

🔹 Historical Insight

  • Great Unani scholars such as Ibn Sīnā and Rāzī described seasonal Tadābīr in Al-Qānūn fi’l-Tibb and Kitāb al-Mansūrī.

  • They emphasized that every season produces specific effects on the humours — Dam (blood), Balgham (phlegm), Safrā (bile), and Saudā (black bile) — which can disturb health if not managed properly.

🔹 The Six Seasons & Their Regimens

Season (Mausam) Dominant Mizāj Recommended Tadābīr
Spring (Rabīʿ) Balanced Light diet, mild exercise, bloodletting if indicated
Summer (Sayf) Hot & Dry Cooling foods, hydration, avoid overexertion
Rainy (Khareef) Humid & Warm Avoid heavy food, maintain cleanliness
Autumn (Sharāt) Dry & Hot Use moistening foods, avoid anger
Winter (Shitā) Cold & Moist Warm food, oil massage, moderate exercise
Pre-spring (Late Winter) Cold Gradual diet change, light warm regimens

🔹 Key Principles of Seasonal Regimens

  1. Adapt Diet: Choose foods opposite to the season’s Mizāj.

  2. Regulate Exercise: Less in summer, more in winter.

  3. Clothing: Light and airy in heat, warm and layered in cold.

  4. Sleep Pattern: Early to bed in winter; wake early in summer.

  5. Emotional Balance: Avoid anger and exhaustion during hot seasons.

🔹 Comparison: Unani vs Modern Preventive Approach

Aspect Unani Medicine Modern View
Focus Mizāj balance with season Immunity & climate adaptation
Diet Opposite to seasonal Mizāj Nutritional and hydration guidelines
Detox Hijāmah or mild purgation Seasonal detox/diet plans
Exercise Seasonal variation Uniform or personalized fitness

✨ Summary

Unani seasonal regimens teach us that nature’s rhythm is the key to health. By aligning our lifestyle with seasonal changes, we can strengthen immunity and maintain internal balance throughout the year.
